So often, we experience feelings of anxiety only to want to push them away. In reality, anxiety serves as an alert system, signalling that something in our lives isn’t quite right. I’m here to help you figure out the root cause of your anxiety and develop strategies to manage it effectively.

Depression is more than just a mood—it’s another form of an alert system that tells us something is off balance. Just like with anxiety, there’s always a reason we feel depressed. I’m here to help you explore those reasons and find ways to improve your emotional well-being.

You’re in love! You’ve just found each other and now you’re wanting to make sure that you are making the best decisions for yourselves. Where to begin? With premarital counseling, we can get into topics that often come up with couples and help pave the way for your marriage together.

Grief & Loss are universal experiences that affect us all at any point in our lives. This includes losing a loved one, a pet, a home, or a job to list a few. Everyone grieves differently and I’m here to support your journey.

How many times has culture or family dictated that we must do something that hurts us? How many of those times did they have good intentions? I’m here to help you take the first step towards understanding yourself, your family, and what you can do to change what you don’t or do want moving forward.

About Me

I’m Donna Xu, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT). I work collaboratively with my clients to develop a personalized approach to reach their goals. With over 8 years of experience in the mental health space I’ve been able to assist in the journeys of hundreds of people and help them achieve serenity.

The Postmodern Treatment

One of the major differences between modern and postmodern therapies, such as, solution focused brief therapy, narrative, and collaborative therapy, is the school of thought. Postmodern therapies focus on deconstructing common beliefs and analyze their values in each client’s life. Postmodern therapists take a collaborative approach in therapy, where they aid the client in exercising self agency rather than a more traditional authoritative or directive approach to therapy. Change comes through collaborative dialogue. Postmodern therapies have been used to help a multitude of conditions such as: anxiety, depression, eating disorders, behavior disorders, schizophrenia, and more.

Here at Serenity Counseling, I am passionate in postmodern school of thought because I believe that the person that knows themselves the most are the clients. I believe that working together to seek a catered solution is more effective in the long run because two people are working towards a solution while also deconstructing beliefs that have not been either, identified in the past, or helpful to the client in their present.

What is Therapy?

Talk Therapy, also known as counseling or psychotherapy, involves individuals, couples, or families meeting with a therapist to resolve issues. These issues can range from problematic behaviors, beliefs, feelings, communication patterns, or other relationship issues. It’s important to note that every individual, couple, or family has different histories, backgrounds, and behaviors so it’s essential to have an initial meeting to develop a catered therapeutic approach.

During your initial meeting we’ll be working together to understand a few key elements:

  • Your background and family history. (i.e. How you were raised etc…)
  • Establish rapport
  • Therapeutic compatibility
  • The nature of the issue you’re experiencing

It’s important to note that therapy is a process. While there are rare cases where an issue can be resolved within an initial session, it typically takes at least a few sessions.  During this process it’s critical that you feel comfortable enough to share things that may be difficult to talk about that lead you to seek therapy.
